Rebirth

My body is breaking, my world caving in.
Darkness surrounds me, I can’t seem to win.
It’s the question that lingers, is this world right for me?
It’s the pain that consumes you, the need to be free.
It’s the twist of your mindset, the sound of it’s call.
The critic or partner, the peace or the war.
The crack of a heart or the crash of the sea.
The sunrise, or sunset. Which one will it be?
I feel claustrophobic, I’ve broken my wings, my heart has been caged, so it no longer sings.
I’m stuck in this cave, and I can’t see the light, I try to be brave but I can’t bare to fight.
I call out to the echoes like a phantom, a ghost, its hauntingly beautiful, what I notice the most, is the sadness that fills me, the angst and the pain, it’s empty like I’ll never feel it again.
I make a decision, I won’t let it take hold, I reach out my claws, and start digging a hole.
This cave is too dark, it’s a tunnel I need, so I can burst through it, face the sky and the sea.
I scrape and I struggle, I crumble the rock, I dig and I dig, I don’t think, I don’t stop.
I crawl through my tunnel, til I get to the top, one final push and the surface, it pops.
I hold myself tightly, and I kick myself through, it’s thunder, it’s lightning, I don’t know what to do.
So I stretch out my wings, and I breathe out my shame, let go of my mourning, and burst into flame.
The fire consumes me, its red and it’s yellow, it glows in the night and it lights up my shadows.
The ash isn’t grey, it’s bright purple instead, wings beat, I lift off, and my soul takes a breath.
My feathers are ruffled, my colour renewed, I burst through the sky, until I break right through.
Not just the thunder, not just the cloud, my very spirit, slips out of it’s shroud.
I soar through the rainbow my storm left for me, I latch on to my voice and then I start to sing.
My song is’t haunted, I’m no longer a ghost, I am the sun, and the sky and the coast.
I might be a phoenix, but I’m not just a bird.
I’m tied, fate and destiny, to this very earth.
I’ve seen many things, many lifetimes of hurt.
But I’m blessed with a soul, that believes in rebirth.

Author’s Notes

Hey Stranger!

So how’s you?

I wrote Rebirth for two reasons. I was thinking about how hard it is to pull ourselves out of a dark space when it shrouds us, and I felt like digging through rock with your bare hands only scrapes the surface sometimes. I love the phoenix. I love what they stand for. I have one tattooed on my ribs and it keeps me going sometimes. When life bursts into flame around you,

It’s an opportunity, not an ending.

The second reason was for a friend of mine in America. I wanted to write her something, she suggested the theme, I had been thinking about it anyway, so I dove in and here it is!

I hope you found something in it!

Along the edge of a dream I’ll see you.

Roux.
